Summary

Enter the dark and sensual realms of the Black Jewels, a world where power always has a price, in this sweeping story in the New York Times bestselling fantasy saga。

They are Warlord Princes, men born to serve and protect。 They are the Queen's Weapons, men born to destroy the Queen's enemies--no matter what face that enemy wears。

Daemonar Yaslana knows how to be bossy yet supportive--traits he shares with his father, the Demon Prince, and his uncle, the High Lord of Hell。 Within his generation of the family, he assumes the role of protector, supporting his sister Titian’s artistic efforts and curbing his cousin Jaenelle Saetien’s more adventurous ideas。 But when a young Eyrien Queen, someone Titian thought was a friend, inflicts an emotional wound, Daemonar's counterattack brings him under the tutelage of Witch, the Queen whose continued existence is known only to a select few。

As Daemonar is confronted by troubling changes within and around the family, he sees warnings that a taint in the Blood might be reappearing。 Daemonar, along with his father and uncle, must uncover the source of a familiar evil--and Daemon Sadi, the High Lord of Hell, may be forced into making a terrible choice。

The first part of the book was just sort of a domestic interlude--we see how all of the SaDiablo family members interact together and get a baseline established。 There's not a lot of action, but it's kinda nice to just hang out with everyone。 Then fast forward a few centuries, and the girls are now the equivalent of high schoolers, eager to go to boarding school (though with very different motives。) Jaenelle falls in with the ultimate mean girls。 I found it very believable that, given how shelte The first part of the book was just sort of a domestic interlude--we see how all of the SaDiablo family members interact together and get a baseline established。 There's not a lot of action, but it's kinda nice to just hang out with everyone。 Then fast forward a few centuries, and the girls are now the equivalent of high schoolers, eager to go to boarding school (though with very different motives。) Jaenelle falls in with the ultimate mean girls。 I found it very believable that, given how sheltered she's been and how inferior she feels compared to her namesake, that she could fall victim to girls trying to push her to feel "special"。 Their evil scheme made me want to go back and read the early books again, since it's very much based on that history。 There's some repetition as we swap back and forth among several view points, but the final showdown is satisfyingly explosive (and bloody)。 。。。more

Anne bishop never fails to enthrall。 This book is a great addition to the series and I finished it quickly。 I love these characters and I loved that it started out as a trilogy and now has a whole big collection。

Good and BadThis book follows a similar format to the other books in the series。 Unfortunately there are too many slow bits and long build ups to make it an unmissable read。 It looks like it may be the 2nd book in a trilogy so we will have to see what comes next

I'm so happy that the author has chosen to return to this world, and that her characters are cooperating by providing another gripping story。 I wish I didn't have to wait so long for the next book! This review will contain SPOILERS! Please don't read it if you have not read the book or you don't want to know some things - IMPORTANT THINGS! - that happen。Before I start I just have to say that Anne Bishop is one of my favorite authors。 I've read every book she has written and I love the Black Jewels series。 Now that that is out of the way, I did enjoy this book but I had some issues with it。 Okay, I had a LOT of issues with it。 I just hope I can remember all of them now that the book is read This review will contain SPOILERS! Please don't read it if you have not read the book or you don't want to know some things - IMPORTANT THINGS! - that happen。Before I start I just have to say that Anne Bishop is one of my favorite authors。 I've read every book she has written and I love the Black Jewels series。 Now that that is out of the way, I did enjoy this book but I had some issues with it。 Okay, I had a LOT of issues with it。 I just hope I can remember all of them now that the book is read。 LOL!I was irritated that they were constantly using two names for daughter Jaenelle。 I know why they were doing it。 It was to differentiate between daughter Jaenelle and Queen Jaenelle, but it seems like they could have done something different like call her by her initials JS or a nickname like Jane or Jess or middle name or really just about anything else。 I just can't imagine constantly calling my daughter by her first and middle name and referring to her all the time as "Brooke Taylor" when I'm discussing her。 This was a minor issue and did not effect my review of this book but it DID get on my nerves! This was another minor thing but it just did not make sense to me。 There was mention of Lucivar tearing a man apart for telling a lie but then nothing was done to the man who killed his wife because "murder isn't a crime for the blood。" Okay so MURDER isn't a crime and deserves no punishment but LYING deserves death? In what world does that make sense???Jaenelle。 Oh poor Jaenelle! And I do mean that。 Yes, she was bratty。 These were her teenage years and many teenagers are bratty。 I just don't think she deserved everything that happened to her。 Teenagers aren't mature and often don't make mature decisions。 This is true of not all but many teenagers。 It takes a long time for a brain to fully mature and until it does impulses are high and mistakes are made。Witch and Tersa both knew what was going to happen but no one tried to save Jaenelle? Really? EVERYONE, except Jaenelle of course, was suspicious of Delora and co but NO ONE did anything? Didn't keep Jaenelle away from them? Didn't pull her out of the school? WHY??? This was your child and you basically threw her away。Surreal and Jaenelle - Jaenelle finds out Surreal used to be a whore and disowns her。 Okay。 Hurtful for sure BUT why didn't she already know??? Why would her parents not have discussed their pasts with her? Obviously there were reasons why Surreal did what she did。 Why did no one explain any of that? Now because your teenager disowned you you are not her mother anymore? WHAT??? The bond is broken forever and can never be fixed! WHAT??? Kids can be hurtful。 My daughter hurt me badly when she was 17 or so。 Our relationship changed and still isn't quite the same but she is still my daughter。 I still love her。 There is always hope。 You never say welp I'm not a mother anymore。 Bond is broken。 This can never be fixed。 That part floored me。So they let Jaenelle have the house party。 Even knowing that bad things are going to happen。 And then they even leave, also while knowing bad things are going to happen。 And then of course the bad things happen (as everyone knew they would) and in the end Jaenelle does do the right thing and does stand in front of Zoey and Titian and does save them but she still ends up stripped of power and exiled? Guess I should be glad they didn't kill her as was also discussed!!!And on a side note - Delora and co are aware that they are under suspicion and they STILL go ahead with their plans? Why would they not bide their time? HOW did they think they were going to get away with it? And when they realized they were locked in? They STILL try to kill Zoey? What is the point in that? There was literally NO WAY for them to get away with this so why would they not wait? That part did NOT make sense。So because Jaenelle fell under the influence of a bad crowd, even though she didn't actually DO anything, she is stripped of some of her power and that supposedly "pays her debt" except it really didn't because she ends up being ripped out of her home and sent to the home for broken witches so that a bunch of OTHER kids can come and live at the hall! WHAT??? Yes, let's send our daughter away so everyone else's children can come and live with us。 Ok。Well, I guess I've bitched enough。 I'm a Mom of 3。 I would do ANYTHING in the world to protect my children and I can't understand people who would not。 I can't understand people who wouldn't even try。 I can't understand people who would throw away their own children。 To me, that was the theme of this book。 。。。more

I loved this book so much! The central conflict was gripping and felt very authentic and relatable。 It was so wonderful seeing the children from earlier books in the series growing and learning how to engage with the world。 As with all of the books in the Black Jewels world, this book dealt with challenging emotional situations that I resonated with and found some moments of self-reflection。 While I wish that there will be another book following this, it also feels like it came to a solid resolu I loved this book so much! Good book, excellent character developmentBut who is on the cover? I still can't figure out the cover of this book。 I didn't buy the book for awhile because it got negative reviews。 I liked it! All I can say is what did these characters ever do to deserve this book? From mismatched plotlines to totally uncharacteristic tendencies, this book is I hope the last in what was once a wrong and favorite series。

It's been a long time since I read the original trilogy so maybe that wouldn't work for me anymore either, but despite loving the early books, reading this one left me cold。 The heroes are portrayed a violent and animalistic with little to no self control, but it's all good because they're the "heroes" and they know what's best for, uh, literally everyone。 And it's totally cool that they use violence, intimidation, and murder to get their way because they're doing it for The Right Reasons or wha It's been a long time since I read the original trilogy so maybe that wouldn't work for me anymore either, but despite loving the early books, reading this one left me cold。 The heroes are portrayed a violent and animalistic with little to no self control, but it's all good because they're the "heroes" and they know what's best for, uh, literally everyone。 And it's totally cool that they use violence, intimidation, and murder to get their way because they're doing it for The Right Reasons or whatever。 Were the original books really this bad and I just didn't notice? At the same time, the women around them are mostly either sweet little dolls who need protecting or else are "bitches", with a few women who are called courageous and wise just for agreeing with the heroes and knowing their place enough to keep their mouths shut most of the time。 The only "evil" boys are acting at the bitches' behest。 The only women portrayed as powerful are the actually-weak-but-strong-willed women (Lucivar's wife and the butler's wife) who are technically not powerful but who the men pretend to be intimidated by when the women snarl at them。 For some reason。 The only genuinely powerful women are basically the ghost of Witch and the remnants of her original coven from the early books。 The book gets a star for genuinely compelling writing despite the problematic nature of the characterizations。 。。。more

And now we’re in the wait period for the next book。 *sigh*

5 Stars。This book is a solid 5 stars for me。 I adore the black jewels series and so I enjoyed every minute of this book。 However, I can see a great many other people not enjoying it as much if they don't have as strong an interest in this world。This book is definitely not where you should jump into the series if you are new to the black jewels world, the author assumes you have some understanding of the world and its rules。 The book is heavy on character development and takes its time setting up 5 Stars。This book is a solid 5 stars for me。 I adore the black jewels series and so I enjoyed every minute of this book。 However, I can see a great many other people not enjoying it as much if they don't have as strong an interest in this world。This book is definitely not where you should jump into the series if you are new to the black jewels world, the author assumes you have some understanding of the world and its rules。 The book is heavy on character development and takes its time setting up the conflict in the story, and also resolving it。 I appreciated that and was very glad the author did not rush any part of the story。 I very much enjoyed seeing where the characters were at in the beginning of the story and having more world building built in as well。 The underlying themes of emotional maturity and mistakes made in teenage years was also very enjoyable, and I'm sure will hit close to home for many。A great addition to the black jewels series, and I really hope the next book comes out soon。 。。。more

Look, this was not the best Black Jewels book, but even a not-great Black Jewels book reminds me how much I love Black Jewels books in general。 In terms of its not great-ness, a lot of the actions taken (or, mostly, not taken) felt really out of character, and the deus ex machina has gotten out of control - also, inexplicably, it summarizes all 10 books that came before it in ways that really weren't needed or relevant。 Will I read it again?
